Convert Hunter Fan From Remote to Pull Chain

I have covered many contrary types of ceiling fan installations in preceding internet site posts and in video, merely this post will focus on attractive an existing ceiling fan that is presently controlled by two wall switches, and converting IT to a distant controlled cap rooter c/w light outfit.

We will exist using a universal remote master unit from Hampton Bay, Model #27157.

SAFETY Starting time!
The opening (as always) is to square up what circuit breaker feeds power to the circuit we are working on, and shut off that breaker.  For a quick review of condom considerations when working around electricity, Cluck Hither.

shutting off breaker

Now that the breakers is bump off, and the electric panel is locked (if and then stocked with) so cipher can accidentally turn the ledgeman back on while you are working on the circuit you can safely begin working.

Service Panel Locked

If you Don't have got provisions for locking off the get at to the panel, put a assemble of electrical tape measure over the breaker handle retention it in the off position, and post a note warning others to leave the breaker off.

REMOVE THE FAN CANOPY COVER
The adjacent step is to remove the canopy of the sports fan to check along the existing wiring, and plan for the induction of the remote control receiver unit. With this particular fan, a trim ring conceals the quaternary climb screws that hold the canopy cover in place. Turn the ring a ¼ turn until information technology comes loose and then remove the 4 screws. You simply need to whole remove one of the screws connected all side, and just loosen the otherwise two that are through the key-hole, or L-slots in the canopy cover to allow it to throw in the towel of the elbow room, exposing the climbing square bracket and the fan wiring.

DISCONNECT THE Present WIRING
Determine how the fan is connected now. There is a 3-telegram cable in the outlet box that provides a common neutral (good) wire, and the fan's light outfit is connected to the red, and the winnow is engaged to the black music director. We only need one of these switched sweltry wires to act as the surmoun power for the receiver unit. I will use the black wire (and the neutral director) to tycoo the receiver, and the else telegram (ruby) will be capped off with a wire screwball and will no more be used in this installation.  Here's a diagram showing how the fan was on-line to the switches initially.

CONNECTING THE REMOTE Liquidator
At present we disconnect the fan and light kit and prepare to put in the unlikely receiver.

The white wire from the supply cable will connect to the line in neutral, and the black wire will connect to the live in, or power in wire from the receiver. The neutral out from the receiving system volition now connect to the common objective for the fan / light, and the black fan wire will attend the wire labelled "fan" (red), and the blue light kit wire will connect to the wire labelled for the light.

Here's a plot showing how the connections are made to the remote pass receiver.

Ceiling fan remote conversion final connections

With entirely the connections made, we need to gather the wires back into the box and install the removed liquidator in the quad available in the mounting bracket out. This can be a difficult job to piss everything fit, merely it's important that everything fits in nicely and that no wires are pinched or packed in as well tightly so to avoid whatever legal injury to the conductors, potentially causing a short circuit condition.

Ceiling Fan Remote Receiver in Place

When the inaccessible pass catcher is installed and the canopy and trim ring are back in place, we can now make our changes in the multi-work party switch boxwood.

In this installation, the two switches that controlled the fan/light are in a 3-crew box that also has the switch for the switched receptacles in the room. Remove the faceplate and the gimmick screws and determine that the switch that restrained the light has a red telegraph on incomparable last, and the switch that controlled the fan has a undiluted wire on one position of IT. Some switches will have a sarcastic hot telegram from the unchanged hot splice connected to each electric switch. We require to remove the switch over we no longer need, and cap off the wires with wire loco. We are abandoning the ruby-red electrify here as we did in the fan electric outlet. We will use the remaining switch as a schoolmaster insure for the remote receiver. I leave move the switch we are inactive using to the middle position, keep the switch for the room's receptacles in the first position, and then use a blank filler plate to fill the position of the switch we removed.

switches removed

With the switches back in situ, and the faceplate installed, it's time to chink our installation.

Restore powerfulness to the electrical circuit and then bend on the master turn on the wall. The remote should now control the operation of the fan and the light. The fan speed and direction will have to be set to the desired position using the pull-chain and override switch, and the light kit rend-Chain volition have to be connected as well in rules of order for the removed to work.

Testing the ceiling fan remote control

Changing a ceiling fan to remote control is an excellent solution for many applications, but particularly in a bedroom where the switch is by the trance door. You can celebrate the remote connected the bedside mesa, and have access to the light and the fan if needed in the midst of the night, without getting out of kip down!

If you aren't comfortable and confident in safely completing a project like this on your own, use the box on the socialistic of the page to find a reliable trusted licensed electrician in your local area.
